I haven't been able to find a fix to this problem and have been switching between the two OS and trying different drivers all day. I figured out that when I connected a 4-pin headset it is detected as an external microphone instead of a headphone. When I use the 4 pin headphone with a 3-pin audio split cable it detects the 4-pin headphones partially inserted.

The thing that is bugging me now is this laptop seems to have a combo audio jack port. And when I insert an 4-pin headset it just detects the microphone which means that it is making contact with three pins and the contact layout is different.

So I guess Dell laptops' combo audio jack ports have a different audio pin layout than a mobile phone. Can this be controlled through software? One thing I did notice just now is that if I do a Restart with the laptop plugged in, the headphones work ok.
